Ankara 2022 | Selim Atak, Rahmi Hızarcıoğlu, Talip Doğu Ayan
The program associated with the proposal is aimed at supporting the growth of creative industries in the city center on a larger scale by transforming the area between Atatürk Boulevard and Kazım Karabekir Avenue into a thriving neighborhood for creative production and commerce. To this end, the project includes a comprehensive guest artist and craftsman program that will be organized and overseen by the municipality. This initiative will serve as a hub for various practices, research, and production processes. Furthermore, the project design involves allocating specific areas for different purposes. These include guest rooms, workshops, and administrative units. Additionally, the plan encompasses the creation of a new building within the bazaar area. This structure will house individual and collective exhibition spaces, enabling guest artists and craftsmen to showcase their works.
Overall, the proposal acknowledges the significance of the existing bazaar in the collective memory of the city. Hence, the design strives to preserve the recognizable silhouette of the current building while ensuring its relevance and functionality for future generations. The main entrance of the proposed design is aligned with Cumhuriyet Avenue, while the new entrance block is deliberately conceived as a distinct architectural element, rather than attempting to mimic the historical aesthetic. This juxtaposition creates a blend of past and present architectural styles. In terms of materiality, the project incorporates travertine cladding for the majority of the building, reinforcing the perception of a unified mass in the landscape and architectural composition. However, the entrance block is distinctively clad in aluminum panels, adding a contrasting element to the overall design.
